2. How to identify a hoax email?

A hoax email is an email in which the perpetrator sends legitimate-looking emails that appear to come from a well-known and trustworthy organization or website, in an attempt to gather personal and financial information from a recipient.

Some ways to identify a hoax email:

  • Check the content is properly worded.
    Some hoax emails may contain grammatical and spelling errors;
  • Check the Sender email address.
    Ask yourself whether you know the sender, or have given your email account to the sender.
    Does the sender address appear to come from a legitimate source?
  • Think about the email’s purpose.
    Does it ask for sensitive financial information? Username and password? Date of birth? Etc.
  • Check the URL
    Move the mouse over the link to see the URL, it usually points to a fake website. The URL will be displayed in the bottom left hand corner of the page. If not, you may right-click and select “Copy link address” and paste it in the notepad and check the URL.

Always keep in mind that ITSC will never request your UIC account or password by email. If you are unsure if an email is hoax, please do not respond or open any links/attachment in the email, just forward it to ITSC (itsc_support@uic.edu.hk).
